TRM announced today that Sujit Raman, former Associate Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and chair of the task force that authored the 2020 DOJ Cryptocurrency Enforcement Framework has joined TRM as General Counsel, bringing his expertise in data privacy, national security, cybercrime prevention and cryptocurrency.
Most recently a partner at the international law firm Sidley Austin LLP, where he advised clients on myriad high-stakes issues including government investigations, cyber/data protection, and multibillion-dollar transactional matters, Mr Raman previously spent nearly a dozen years as a federal prosecutor, culminating in his service as Associate Deputy Attorney General. In that role, he personally advised the U.S. Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General in their oversight of the nation’s cyber-related criminal and national security investigations and prosecutions. Mr Raman also led DOJ’s policy formulation in a number of critical areas, including cybersecurity, cross-border data transfers and protection, and emerging technologies such as facial recognition and encryption.
With extensive experience in international affairs, Mr Raman was a lead U.S. representative in high-profile data-sharing negotiations with the United Kingdom, Australia, and the European Union, and co-led the United States’ delegation to the G6 Interior Ministers’ conference in Munich in 2019. From 2018–to 2020, he chaired the Attorney General’s Cyber-Digital Task Force, leading the formulation of DOJ’s policy and operational response to transnational cybercrime, nation-state-sponsored malign cyber activity, and online foreign influence operations. Mr Raman also represented DOJ on cyber matters before the National Security Council at the White House and testified before the U.S. Senate on the nation’s cyber priorities. Prior to his leadership role at DOJ headquarters, Mr Raman served for over eight years as an Assistant United States Attorney in Maryland.
Mr Raman has received numerous professional awards including the “Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service” (2018), the Executive Office of United States Attorneys “Director’s Award” (2017), the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association “Best Lawyers Under 40” Award (2015), the National South Asian Bar Association “Cornerstone Award” (2015), and the U.S. Secret Service “Director’s Award” (2013).
“Today is a pivotal time in the shaping of a new internet economy,” said Mr Raman. “In both government and the private sector, I have been grateful to work on incredible teams that span the globe. I am deeply honoured to join TRM in advancing its mission of stopping bad actors, protecting our institutions, and building a safer financial system for billions of people.”
“Sujit is an outstanding lawyer, a trusted counsellor, and a peerless strategist. Most importantly, he embodies our values and is dedicated to our mission,” said TRM’s Ari Redbord. “I could not be more proud to have him as TRM’s legal leader.”
“As we continue to innovate, to provide the best support to our clients, and build the best blockchain intelligence tool and team, Sujit’s leadership will be critical to developing our strategy and executing our mission,” said TRM co-founder and CEO Esteban Castano. “I am extremely excited for Sujit to join our executive team at this extraordinary moment for TRM.”
